Alexander Stadium Case Study

Safety Balustrades For Alexander Stadium

Design Your Own Balustrade

Project Overview

The Alexander Stadium, a crucial sporting facility set to host events of international significance, needed a robust and safe balustrade system. The initial project scope involved replacing compromised glass panels and testing the existing balustrade to adhere to the 3.0kN/m horizontal line load specifications.

Challenges

The primary challenges of this project included ensuring compliance with stringent loading standards, rectifying issues left by the original balustrade installer who are no longer in business, and meeting the urgent timeline to align with the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

SMART Balustrades’ Solution

SMART Balustrades devised a comprehensive solution to address the structural concerns and enhance the balustrade’s load-bearing capacity. This involved increasing the glass thickness, strategically incorporating structural interlayers, installing a 60mm diameter stainless steel capping rail, meticulous inspection and replacement of existing fixings, and adding glass-to-glass clamps at critical points.

Execution and Implementation

Working collaboratively with Acivico Group (Birmingham City Council) and distinguished contractors McLaughlin & Harvey, SMART Balustrades executed the project with precision and expertise. The existing balustrade underwent thorough testing after the enhancements to ensure it met the required 3.0kN/m horizontal line load.

Results

The outcome of the project showcased SMART Balustrades’ expertise in enhancing the strength and safety of the balustrade at The Alexander Stadium. The balustrade successfully met the demanding 3.0kN/m horizontal line load, ensuring the safety of attendees during the Commonwealth Games. The strengthened balustrade stood as a testament to SMART Balustrades’ commitment to excellence and compliance.

Conclusion

The collaboration between SMART Balustrades, Turner & Townsend, Acivico Group, and McLaughlin & Harvey stands as a successful endeavour in fortifying the safety and compliance of The Alexander Stadium’s balustrade system. This project ensured a secure environment for the 2022 Commonwealth Games and affirmed SMART Balustrades’ dedication to delivering high-quality solutions under challenging circumstances.
